Women’s
soccer drops first games despite defense
From
staff reports
The
Long Beach State women’s soccer team showcased
its solid defense over the weekend, but
late runs by No. 20-ranked Pepperdine University
and Navy resulted in a pair of losses to
kick off the new season.
In
Sunday’s match against Pepperdine, the 49ers
neutralized the Waves’ offensive attack
for most of the first half. But after Pepperdine’s
Ali Pavoni heated up, the game moved out
of reach for LBSU, which lost 4-1.
Pavoni
pinpointed a pair of shots into the goal,
dropping The Beach into a 2-0 deficit before
halftime.
The
Waves cushioned their lead early in the
second half behind two more goals, making
it a 4-0 contest.
However,
the 49ers offensive success arrived in the
final minutes of the game as Abie Curry
maneuvered around Pepperdine defenders and
fired the ball into the net late.
In
Friday’s match against Navy, The Beach defense,
anchored by goalie Hannah Cochrun, stifled
the Midshipmen forwards, shutting their
opponent out in the first half.
The
49ers allowed only three shots in the first
half, but Navy answered with two goals in
the second for a 2-0 victory.
Sarah
Aguilar led LBSU on offense with four shots.
