Women’s volleyball remains undefeated

From staff reports

The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team hosted the Mizuno Invitational at The Pyramid over the weekend, and home court advantage was certainly in effect as the fifth-ranked 49ers rolled to a 4-0 record to begin its 2002 campaign.

The Beach swept Baylor University, 30-25, 30-23, 20-25, and Oral Roberts University, 30-23, 30-20, 30-17, Saturday.

Elisha Thomas hammered 15 kills, while Kessie Doering added 14 to lead the LBSU attack against Baylor.

Against Oral Roberts, Erika Chidester had nine kills and a career-high 10 blocks to lift The Beach to big victory. Also, Raimi Mitchell contributed nine kills in the match.

The LBSU defense staggered the Golden Eagles, who hit a low .064 in the match.

In addition, The Beach cruised to a pair of wins on Friday, sweeping the University of Dayton, 30-15, 30-19, 30-23, and the University of Loyola, Chicago, 30-16, 30-17, 30-21.

Chidester tallied a career-high 11 kills to propel LBSU over Dayton before a home crowd of 2,166.

Also, the 49ers collected 10.5 team blocks and 54 digs en route to an easy win over Loyola.
