It was a weekend of highs and lows for the No. 9-ranked 49ers men’s water polo team as they competed in northern California, falling to top-ranked Stanford on Saturday, but defeating UC Santa Cruz on Friday.

Saturday’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest against Stanford ended in a 14-6 loss for Long Beach State (10-11, 0-3).

Stanford was able to score first within a mere one minute of the game, Mike Derse scored one of his three goals.

However, senior Aaron Holloway was able to spark a rally and fire in two goals for the 49ers, boosting LBSU to a 2-1 advantage.

Later in the first quarter, 49ers senior Kellyn Carlson shot the first of his two goals to break a 2-2 tie.

However, toward the closing of the quarter, Derse stepped up and added three goals for the Cardinal, lifting Stanford to a 5-3 lead.

Cardinal Tony Azevedo scored two of his four goals, giving Stanford a 9-5 lead later in the half.

In the second half, Stanford sealed the victory, posting four goals in the third and one more in the fourth.

For The Beach, juniors David Del Grande and Nathan Allard each tallied one goal.

On Friday, the 49ers were able to defeat UC Santa Cruz, 13-4.

Getting the non-conference game off to a great start, LBSU was able to gain an impressive 9-2 lead against UCSC.

Sophomore Erik Geoffroy, The Beach’s highest scorer this season, shot his first goal of the day at 50 seconds in the first and found the back of the net again at 5:05 in the third.

The 49ers finished strong when sophomore Nick Becskehazy fired one in at the 2:14 mark in the third quarter with a 12-2 lead.

In addition, 49ers freshman goalie Thomas Onyshko set a career-high record with 11 saves on the day.
