The
Long Beach State men’s golf team faced one
of the toughest fields of the year Monday
and Tuesday at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational
in Fairfax, Calif., and the 49ers finished
15th out of 17 teams.
Nick
Seymour with Chris Gilley tying for 49th
place to lead The Beach in the individual
results at the Meadow Club.
LBSU
had one of the best rounds of the season
in the second round on Monday, collectively
shooting 284.
“The
thing that was the best about the round
was that our throw-out score or our highest
score was 73, which is only two over par,”
head coach Bob Livingstone said. “That is
indicative of everybody playing well, and
that is our goal.”
After
the stellar second round, the 49ers struggled
through a round marred by inclement weather,
shooting 308 and defeating only Stanford
and University California Santa Barbara.
“It
was very windy, and they set it up really,
really tough. I think the average score
was three shots higher,” Livingstone said.
Topping
Stanford and UCSB is very important to the
men’s golfers because those teams are western
regional foes and head-to-head victories
determine who will and will not make the
playoffs in May.
Individually,
Fresno State’s Nick Watney continued his
brilliance on the links, winning his fourth
tournament of the year and shooting 202.
Watney
was followed by Tom Johnson of Northwestern,
John Ellis of the University of Oregon and
Roy Moon of the UCLA, all of whom tied for
2nd place.
For
the 49ers, following Gilley and Seymour
were sophomore James Logeman who tied for
62nd, junior Torey Edwards tied for 67th
and sophomore Ryan Plummer tying for 69th.
Led
by Watney, Fresno State took home its second
consecutive team title with a three round
score of 841, while UCLA, Northwestern,
Cal Berkeley, and Oregon rounding out the
top five respectively.
