49ers
men’s golf claims 15th in Fresno

The
Long Beach State men’s golf team finished
15th out of 18 teams at the Fresno Lexus
Golf Classic last Friday and Saturday at
the San Joaquin Country Club thanks in large
part to another solid showing from junior
Chris Gilley.
Gilley
shot 224 over the three-round tournament
to finish 38th individually.
The 49ers started the tournament playing
well and were leading the field until the
final holes of the first round.
“We had a horrible par five where we had
a triple bogey, double bogey, double bogey,
bogey and we just instantly went from first
to ninth,” head coach Bob Livingstone said.
This tournament had a slightly different
format than most with all of the 49ers playing
in the same group.
Normally, the team would be split and play
with other schools, but the members of the
host country club prefer to see all of the
Fresno State golfers on one hole.
Livingstone said that he prefers coaching
a tournament of this format because he is
better able to coach the golfers when they
are all present at one hole. However, Livingstone
added that the downside of such a tournament
is that when the 49ers start to play poorly,
that poor play can snowball.
Tournament host Fresno State University
took the team championship with an overall
score of 870, while the University of Texas
El Paso, Colorado State, San Diego State
and Brigham Young University rounded out
the top five respectively.
Individually, Fresno State senior Nick Watney
won the tournament finishing three strokes
ahead of the nearest competitor.
Individually for The Beach, after Gilley
were senior Nick Seymour and redshirt freshman
Ryan Plummer who tied for 57th, sophomore
James Logeman tied for 62nd and senior Robert
Sul finished in 84th place.
In addition, the men’s golf team has a busy
week, as they traveled directly from Fresno
to Oakland to play in the Allistair MacKenzie
Cup at The Meadow Club.
Livingstone replaced senior Robert Sul in
the field with junior Torey Edwards for
the tournament in Oakland, and the results
from that tournament will be in Thursday’s
edition of the On-line Forty-Niner.
