Road warriors sweep CSUF, UCR

The Long Beach State women’s volleyball team swept the Cal State Fullerton Titans and the UC Riverside Highlanders in six straight games in a pair of Big West Conference matches on the road this past weekend.
 
Kessie Doering The 49ers improved to 13-1, 5-1 in conference after beating the Titans, 30-15, 30-24, 30-23, on Saturday night at the Titan Gym, while Fullerton fell to 4-14, 0-5 in conference.
 
LBSU’s Kessie Doering led the way with a match-high 15 kills, .401 hitting percentage, three service aces, six digs and five total blocks.
 
Senior Elisha Thomas added 11 kills and six blocks for The Beach, while Erika Chidester had seven kills and five digs. Senior Brittany Hochevar dished out a match-high 40 assists, while chipping in on defense with five digs and five blocks.
 
Fullerton’s Carley Dial had a team-high 10 kills, while Kim Levey tallied 29 assists.
 
But it wasn’t enough to beat the 49ers’ solid defense.
 
The Beach held the Titans to a .091 hitting percentage for the entire match with 11 total team blocks.
 
Friday night, Thomas led LBSU to a 30-22, 30-19, 30-13 victory over UCR with a match-high 18 kills.
 
The Highlanders were no match for the 49ers as the team dropped to 5-9, 1-3 in conference.
 
Thomas also added two digs and six blocks, while teammates Doering added 12 kills, a.417 attack percentage and seven digs, and Hochevar set up the offense with another match-high 33 assists.
 
LBSU limited UC Riverside to a low hitting percentage for the entire match, as the team racked up 24 block assists.
 
The Highlanders were led by Katie DeRoos, who posted a team-best eight kills, while teammates Tiffany Brooks set up 20 assists and Jamie DeKieweiet added five kills and eight digs.
 
The Beach has now stung together four straight victories over UCR.
 
The 49ers resume action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday against the University of the Pacific at The Pyramid.
