keys win in Big West opener

The
Long Beach State women’s soccer team needed
three second-half goals to win its Big West
Conference opener Friday afternoon as the
Beach defeated Utah State, 3-1.
The victory was the second consecutive year
the 49ers (3-6-2, 1-0) have won their first
conference game under Coach Peter Reynaud.
The three second-half goals are the most
LBSU has scored in latter part of a game
since October 14, 2000.
In addition, after starting the season with
four consecutive losses, the Beach is 3-2-2
over the last seven games.
The Aggies (6-4-2, 0-1-0) took the lead
at the 14:05 mark of the game when Heather
Arnell scored her fifth goal of the season.
Utah State would hold on for the rest of
the first half with a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies would find the back of then net
once more, but not the way the hoped for.
LBSU tied the game when the Aggies fired
the ball into their own goal at the 49:46
mark of the game.
The Beach took the lead when All-Big West
player sophomore midfielder Diana Sanguinetti
scored an unassisted goal at the 52:32 mark.
The 49ers put the game out of reach when
senior forward Sarah Gamet scored her third
goal of the season at the 77:30 mark.
LBSU goalie Hannah Cochrun, making her first
start since the season opener, had six saves
and allowed only one goal in 90 minutes
of play.
The 49ers return to action at 3 p.m. on
Thursday, playing Saint Mary’s College on
the road.
