Women’s soccer shut out by Aztecs

soccerThe Long Beach State women’s soccer team’s offense was missing in action Tuesday afternoon as the 49ers were shutout by visiting San Diego State, losing 3-0.

The Beach (2-6-2) out shot the Aztecs (7-2) eight-to-three in the first half, but could not get any points on the board.

The game remained a scoreless tie until SDSU forward Arinda Alvarez received a pass from midfielder Brianna Weymouth and scored from 25 yards out at the 34:06 mark.

The Aztecs went into halftime with a 1-0 lead and never looked back.

The 49ers came out sluggish and tired due to heavy preseason scheduling. Meanwhile, SDSU took advantage of this and scored twice more in the second half.

SDSU senior forward Nicole Findlay scored both second-half goals for the Aztecs. The first came at the 66:10 mark from a pass by freshman midfielder Amanda Swiader.

Findlay’s next goal came three minutes later at the 69:00 minute mark when she took a pass from senior midfielder Michele Wagner and scored from 25 yards out.

The Beach did not play up to its ability, senior midfielder Sarah Aguilar said.

“Mentally, we were just lax,” Aguilar said. “It wasn’t there.”

Tuesday’s performance was a letdown, Aguilar said, because the team played so well two days prior against the University of Nevada, winning 5-0.

“We obviously didn’t show mental strength today,” Aguilar said. “It’s a little disappointing for all of us.”

The team’s spirits are low, but they have to recover because its next three games are on the road, Aguilar said.

The Beach could have pulled out a victory Tuesday, but did not show up to play, LBSU coach Peter Reynaud said.

“I’m very disappointed in today’s performance because I didn’t think this team [SDSU] was that good,” Reynaud said.

Reynaud attributes his team’s lethargic play to the amount of preseason games against quality opponents.

“Our schedule is taking its toll - there’s no doubt about it,” Reynaud said. “We’re a little bit tired.”

The 49ers’ begin play in the Big West Conference as they travel to face Utah State Friday at 2 p.m. and Idaho on Sunday at 1 p.m.
