Davis called it quits as a Long Beach State
men’s basketball player on Aug. 26.
Davis,
a 6-foot-5 guard from Compton who was a
redshirt freshman last season, came to LBSU
last year from Centennial High where he
averaged 18.9 points and 3,3 assists per
game.
“Last year the coaches redshirted him [Davis]
because he did have a shoulder injury at
the beginning of the season but he did rehab
that,” said, Steve Janisch director of sports
information for men’s basketball. “They
did wind up redshirting three or four guys
last year.
“They thought that they had a pretty good
nucleus of players coming back was the thinking
of the old coaching staff so he was one
of the guys they decided to redshirt,” Janisch
said. “He gets to practice for a year
and gets his shoulder all healed up and
then he would still have four more years
to play.”
Davis did not play in any games during his
freshman year due to the shoulder injury
and the redshirting situation Janisch said.
However, Davis is probably going to go pursue
basketball at a community college Janisch
said.
“He can’t sign a national letter of intent
but he could go to another school though
and sign a financial aid agreement and basically
be re-recruited again by other schools,”
Janisch said.
In addition, Davis does not have to pay
back the scholarship that he was given by
the men’s basketball program, Janisch said.
“Now that he is leaving he is giving up
his scholarship so there would be another
scholarship open for men’s basketball but
this late right before school you can’t
find anybody else [to replace Davis],” Janisch
said.
Head Coach Larry Reynolds in a press release
said, “Anthony Davis came in and asked for
his release, and it was granted.” We wish
him the best in his future endeavors.”
