The
Long Beach State women’s soccer team won
its first home game of the season Sunday
in a convincing manner by defeating the
University of Nevada, 5-0.
Junior
forward Abie Curry set an LBSU record with
three goals in the game, breaking the previous
record held by her and two others. The 49ers
(2-5-2) also set team records for most goals,
shots and margin of victory.
Curry first scored at the 22-minute mark
when she received a pass from the left side
by sophomore defender Allison Wiegand.
The Beach scored again at the 28:48 mark
when junior defender/midfielder Lauren Doffing
sent the ball toward the net and Wiegand
headed it in for a goal.
Curry’s second goal came soon after Wiegand’s
score at the 29:28 mark when she headed
in a pass from senior defender Becky Ricci
into the net.
Curry scored for the third and final time
at the 72:19 mark when she took a pass from
freshman midfielder/forward Laura Kucich
and put in a left-footed kick from the right
side of the field over Wolf Pack goalie
Megan Tarpenning’s outstretched hands.
LBSU’s fifth goal came with 34 seconds remaining
when freshman midfielder Amy Leipham scored
her first career goal from 40 yards out.
The 49ers allowed only two shots on goal
against the Wolf Pack (3-7).
After starting the season 0-4 and being
outscored 10-2, the Beach has outscored
its opponents 12-5 in the last five games,
winning and tying twice.
The turnaround in the 49ers’ season is not
unexpected, LBSU head coach Peter Reynaud
said.
“We’re finally getting to a part of our
schedule where we can play against some
of these teams,” Reynaud said. “I overscheduled
them and everybody knows that.”
However, playing difficult teams has helped
LBSU, Wiegand said.
“Since the Pepperdine game, we’ve improved
tremendously,” Wiegand said. “If you took
a look at us at Pepperdine, you took a look
at us now, you wouldn’t even think it’s
the same team.
“We have come together individually and
as a team.”
Curry attributes the 49er’s recent success
to their attitude on the field.
“We’re playing relaxed and confident,” Curry
said. “We know that we’re good. We know
that we can win games, it’s just being confident.
“We have a lot of skill on our team, it’s
just putting it together.”
In addition, The Beach is scoring more because
their shots are finally going in, Curry
added.
“They’ve been there the whole time,” Curry
said. “Everybody’s been serving perfect
balls and we’re just finally getting them
in.”
Also, the 49ers played San Diego State at
home Tuesday and the results will be in
Thursday’s edition of the On-line Forty-Niner.
