49ers cruise to big wins at home

Aaron HollowayRacking up two dynamic home victories on Saturday’s doubleheader, the Long Beach State men’s water polo fired up the competition with a 19-0 win over Occidental and 11-9 victory against Cal Baptist.
 
In the game against Occidental, sophomore James Durley and redshirt freshman Thomas Onyshko lead the 49ers to a definitive win.
 
Highlights from the game included Durley’s career-high record setting of five goals, and Onyshko’s shut out the Tigers with 10 saves in his first start defending the net.
 
Aaron Holloway, David Del Grande, Ken Turner, Kareem Captan and Sean MacKenzie each scored two goals for the 49ers.
 
The Beach also racked up another momentum-gaining win against Cal Baptist in the opening game. Sophomore Erik Geoffroy set a career-high four goals, including the go-ahead, game-winning score, while Holloway and Allard each added two.
 
In the final 30 seconds of the first quarter and four minutes into the second, LBSU scored four unanswered goals to break away from a 2-2 tie.
 
Allard scored both of his goals during the run, including one at the 2:50 mark in the second quarter, boosting the 49ers a 6-2 lead.
 
During the third quarter, junior Pat Logan fired a goal at the 3:03 mark to make it a 9-5 advantage.
 
In the remaining two minutes of the third quarter, Cal Baptist fought back with three goals by Steve Dugger and Gora Milic, cutting the lead to 9-8.
 
During the fourth quarter, Cal Baptist tied the contest with its fourth consecutive goal as Jonathan Smiley scored at the 2:34 mark, making the score 9-9.
 
However, Geoffroy took over late in the fourth, scoring the go-ahead goal and another goal on a four-meter penalty shot in the final two minutes of the game.
 
The Beach lost to Loyola Marymount University at home on Thursday, 8-6.
 
The doubleheader improved The Beach’s record to 6-7 and is currently ranked No. 8 in the country.
 
Long Beach State men’s water polo will compete in the Northern California tournament this Saturday and Sunday it Berkley.
