Mexico edges 49ers

The Long Beach State women’s soccer team narrowly missed their first home win of the season Thursday, losing an exhibition game to the Mexican National team, 2-1.

The 49ers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 46:30 mark when sophomore forward Marcia Rewoldt hit the upper crossbar and scored from 25 yards on the right side of the field.

The Beach held the lead until the 65-minute mark when Mexico’s forwards scored two goals in 45 seconds. The first goal came at the 64:50 mark when Iris Mora scored from the left side of the field on a pass from defender Maria de Jesus Castillo Nicasio. Mexico then marched back down the field and scored again at the 65:34 mark when Maribel Dominguez Castelan scored on a pass from Mora.

LBSU had several opportunities late in the game but could not find the back of the net.

Returning home to face an international team after winning the Ohana Shootout was a great experience for the 49ers, LBSU senior midfielder Sarah Aguilar said.

“It’s a real opportunity to play these girls,” Aguilar said. “We have to walk away from every game thinking we played our best.”

The Beach’s loss may discourage some, but Rewoldt said the team wanted to play top-caliber squads in the preseason to prepare for a shot at the Big West Championship.

“We stacked our preseason games,” Rewoldt said. “We haven’t gone in and played easy schools and come out with a bunch of wins so we can feel better about ourselves.”

The 49ers used many different lineups against the Mexico because some players looked tired after traveling to the Hawaiian tournament, Coach Peter Reynaud said.

“We’ve got a long ways to go,” Reynaud said, “so for me to waste them here and I’ve got game in two days, then I have another game on Tuesday and I have another game on Friday, so I’m looking way ahead.”

The objective for the 49ers was to play a friendly game and to gain international experience, Reynaud said.
