Beach takes 13th at Pacific Invitational

Chris GilleyThe Long Beach State men’s golf team shot a disappointing final round of 305 to finish 13th out of 14 teams at the Pacific Invitational Golf Tournament, played at the Reserve at Spanos Park Monday and Tuesday in Stockton.

“It was surprising that you can play so well one day and then play so awful the next,” LBSU head coach Bob Livingstone said.

Although junior Chris Gilley shot a 49er-best 74 in the final round, he also had a tough Tuesday falling from first place to 11th in the individual standings and finishing five strokes back of the leader.

The individual title was garnered by Coastal Carolina’s Alvero Velasco who was followed by Cal State Northridge’s Pete Smith, finishing one shot back.

UCLA took home the team title in the three-round tournament, finishing 16 strokes ahead of second-place Coastal Carolina.

In the tournament, Gilley was followed by senior Nick Seymour, 43rd, freshman Ryan Plummer and senior Tyler Mays, who both tied for 58th, and junior Torey Edwards, who came in 68th.

The competition was the first time this season The Beach was able to face Big West Conference competition.
University of the Pacific, UC Riverside, Cal State North-ridge and defending conference champion UC Irvine were all tournament participants.

“Irvine is definitely the team to beat this year,” Livngstone said. “I was also surprised with how much better Northridge is.”

Tournament host Pacific finished 11th at the five-year-old, semi-private, 7,000-yard golf course that features 360 acres of lakes, wetlands and working farmland.

The Beach will be competing again Oct. 11 and 12 at the Fresno Lexus Bulldog Classic at San Joaquin Country Club.

Meanwhile, the 49ers will use the time in between tournaments to hone some of their skills individually and to have a qualifying tournament to see which golfers will be eligible for future tournaments, Livingstone said.
