The
Long Beach State women’s soccer team returned
home Tuesday winners of the Ohana Hotels
& Resort Shootout, tying host team University
of Hawaii 1-1 in the championship game Monday.
The
49ers were chosen as the winners of the
tournament on a technicality. The Beach
and the Rainbow Wahines had identical records
in the shootout (1-0-1), but the 49ers allowed
only one goal in two games, compared to
two given up by Hawaii, giving LBSU the
tournament victory.
LBSU striker Abie Curry scored the game’s
first goal at the six-minute mark when she
outran the Rainbow Wahine defense and put
the ball in the net with a right-footed
shot into the lower left corner.
The Hawaii offense scored their only goal
of the game 36 seconds into the second half
when Natasha Kai beat 49ers’ goalie Meghan
Hartwyk with a left-footed shot off a Joelle
Sugai cross.
The Beach advanced to the championship game
by defeating Long Island University, 5-0,
on Saturday for their first win of the season.
Five goals is the highest amount the team
has scored in its five-year history and
also the largest margin of victory in that
time.
The 49ers offense was balanced with five
different players scoring a goal each.
The Beach kept the pressure on the Blackbirds
by outshooting them 18-7. LBSU freshman
forward Shaina O’Donnell scored the game’s
first goal at the 5:15 mark with a shot
that deflected off the hands of Long Island
goalie Holly Nixon.
Curry scored the 49ers’ next goal at the
20:57 mark after O’Donnell sent the ball
to the right side of the field.
Senior midfielder Sarah Aguilar scored LBSU’s
third goal at the 37:58 mark when a Long
Island defender tried to clear the ball
but missed.
Then, senior forward Sarah Gamet scored
the fourth goal of the game 2 minutes and
43 seconds into the second half off a pass
from Curry.
In addition, the fifth goal was accidentally
scored by a Blackbird defender.
Curry, Gamet, midfielder Diana Sanguinetti
and defender Natalie Messina were all named
to the all-tournament team.
The Beach’s next game is at 3 p.m. Thursday
at George Allen field against the Mexican
National team.
