The
Long Beach State men’s golf team shot a
final round of 299 to finish 11th at the
Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational,
which was held at the Inverness Club in
Toledo, Ohio, on Monday and Tuesday.
Sophomore
Ryan Plummer took the top rank for the 49ers,
finishing tied for 24th in the field of
75 golfers. The Beach was able to
improve its team score in each of the three
rounds, shooting 309 and 302 in the first
and second round on Monday and 299 in the
final round on Tuesday.
“It was probably the best we’ve played in
a year and a half,” said head coach Bob
Livingstone.
Livingstone was especially impressed considering
the difficulty of the golf course.
“I believe it is the 29th toughest course
in the nation,” Livingstone said.
The University of Florida won the tournament
finishing 32 strokes ahead of the 49ers,
while Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Michigan
State, and tournament host Toledo rounding
out the top five.
Individually, Florida’s Camilo Villegas
and Fresno State’s Nick Watney tied for
the best three-day scores, shooting 215.
After Plummer, who finished atop the list
of LBSU players in the second straight tournament,
The Beach golfers placed in this order,
senior Tyler Mays, 34th, senior Nick Seymour,
37th, junior Chris Gilley, 57th, and senior
Robert Sul 59th.
The 49ers will be back in action next Monday
and Tuesday at the 30th Pacific Invitational,
held at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton,
Calif.
