49ers struggle in rain at OSU tourney

After playing an intense three-round tournament in the rainfall of the Pacific Northwest, the 49ers women’s golf team finished in 14th place at the Oregon State Shanico Invitational.

Long Beach wrapped up the tournament, played at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Oreg, with a score of 319, shooting a total score of 319-303-320—942.

Top LBSU players for the tournament included freshman Hayley Wilkinson, scoring a total of 234—79-76-79 to tie for 42nd place overall. Other highlights included junior Marie Louise Juul shooting a 236—79-79-78 to tie for 48th, while freshman Melissa Keller ended up with a score 237—82-71-84, which placed her at 51st .

Monday’s round included solid contributions from team captain Carla Legaspi with a score of 77, and assistant team captain senior Teal Thorn with a score of 82.

After observing how the 49ers were playing in the tournament, Coach Sue Ewart is confident that the team can step up with the upcoming tournaments.

“I have no doubt that this team is going to come around,” Ewart said. “They know what they are capable of doing, now that first two tournaments are done.

“The team will get into some routine and work out a few kinks, and now that school has started, everyone feels confident about the season.”

Another area the team needs to focus is getting practice time on the course.

Now that the team has a break in between their next tournament, the 49ers have the opportunity to tone up their skills.

“All they need to do is practice and get out on the course a little bit,” Ewart said. “I know that these players are solid. I have a lot of pride and joy for the team and all they need is time and they can outshine other players at the tournaments.”

The next tournament for the 49ers will be October 7 though 9, when they compete at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Tacoma, Wash.
