Once
a year the Big West Conference awards the
Commissioner Cup to the college with the
best all-around athletic program.
Long Beach State ranked second in the 2001-2002
Cup standings among the ten schools that
participated in the conference. UC Santa
Barbara won the Cup.
“The Cup is like a validation to each student
and athletic program amongst the conference
that their program is the best all around
instead of just a specific sport,” said
Mike Villamor, assistant information director
of the Big West organization.
A point system is used to determine the
winner of the Cup each year. There are 17
sports that each college are allowed to
participate in and must compete in at least
five of them. Depending on the school’s
final ranking of each sport within the conference,
points are distributed accordingly. The
champion of each sport gets an additional
20 points.
The combined points are divided by the number
of sports competed, and the average determines
the final ranking.
The winner of the Cup receives a silver
cup from the Big West to display in the
school’s athletic office for the year.
When the Cup was first given in 1999, LBSU
competed in 12 sports and came in third
place. In 2000 Long Beach competed in 12
sports and came in sixth place. In 2001,
Long Beach competed in nine sports and came
in sixth place.
In addition, the ten schools that currently
compete in the Big West are UC Santa Barbara,
Long Beach State, University of the Pacific,
Utah State, UC Irvine, Cal State Northridge,
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, University of
Idaho, Cal State Fullerton, and UC Riverside.
LBSU currently competes in 13 of the 17
sports, while Cal Poly is the only school
that competes in all 17 sports.
