A
quick first half attack by the University
of San Diego was enough to keep Long Beach
State quiet and eventually scoreless on
Sunday en route to a 3-0 loss.
Two
early goals by Marie-Claude Henry and Brenna
Mullen helped the Toreros jump ahead. In
the second half USD added a third goal to
seal the shutout and improve their record
to 5-1-0. LBSU fell to 0-5-1, and were led
by Hannah Cochran, who had five saves in
the second half.
San
Diego had the edge over the 49ers throughout
the game by out shooting them 17-5.
Up
next for the 49ers is a trip to the University
of Hawaii Classic, to face Long Island on
Saturday and then will play host Hawaii
on Monday.
Men’s
water polo earns1-3 record
The
LBSU men’s water polo team went 1-3 at the
Southern California Tournament at the USC
campus. The tournament featured many nationally
ranked teams that gave the ninth-ranked
49ers a stiff challenge.
The
Beach was defeated by UCLA, 4-2, Sunday
morning. Later on Sunday the 49ers fell
to Pepperdine, 10-8, in the seventh place
game.
LBSU
had a 6-4 lead over Pepperdine at the halfway
point during the afternoon game, but that
was not enough to keep the fourth-ranked
Waves from outscoring the 49ers in the second
half, 6-2. The 49ers leading scorers for
the game were, Eric Geoffroy and Aaron Holloway,
who scored two goals apiece.
The
49ers, David Del Grande and Brad Scoles,
scored the only two goals for the 49ers
in the first game. UCLA goalie, Brandon
Brooks, kept LBSU in check with seven goalie
saves.
On
Saturday, in the second game of the So Cal
tournament, LBSU faced top-ranked Stanford.
A 9-0 lead at halftime was more than enough
of a cushion for the Cardinals, who defeated
the 49ers, 10-6.
Redshirt
freshmen, Thomas Onyshko, came in the second
half and controlled Stanford by allowing
only one goal and having five saves. Del
Grande and Geoffroy led 49ers, with two
scores each. Stanford was lead by Long Beach
native, Tony Azevedo and Mike Derso, with
three scores each.
In
addition, the 49ers opened the So Cal Tournament
Saturday with a 7-5 victory over eighth-ranked
University of San Diego. After trailing
3-1 at the half, the 49ers turned it up
a notch by getting goals from five different
players. Goalie Michael Konstas had eight
saves to hold back USD from a last quarter
surge.
