Our view

Signing off for the semester

It has been a long semester. Actually, the semester has been about the same length as all the other semesters but it certainly has seemed like an extraordinarily long semester.

We have been through a lot, let’s review. (Don’t worry, there won’t be a test at the end.)

Probably one of the most controversial events that took place this semester was the Graphic Design Junior Show’s use of a picture of a noose to advertise the event. After printing the news article on the advertisement, the On-line Forty-Niner received a wave of letters to the editor concerning the topic. The advertisements were taken down and the letters kept coming. The situation seemed to get uglier by the day and then it began to die down.

An equally, if not more controversial event occurred when a student took it upon himself to decorate parts of Parkside Commons with symbols of hate, including swastikas and an other racial epitaph. The incident sparked another wave of anger, bitterness and letters to the editor.

Election Day came and went leaving us Gray Davis to deal with and now the education budget has been hacked down causing tuition fees to jump up.

For some students, this semester has been an eye opening one. The racism that appeared on campus surprised most of us and demonstrated that even here, at Cal State Long Beach, which is such a diverse campus, we are not sheltered from racism and that it still exists.

Even with all of these negative events, CSULB has seen positive things come through them. There have been rallies and protests throughout the semester for various causes. Students have taken a stand for what they believe in and voiced their opinions. The hundreds of letters to the editor demonstrate that fact clearly.

Some students will leave Cal State Long Beach at the end of this semester and embark upon a new leg of life’s journey, after college. For other students the end of this semester brings them one leap closer to graduation day. Whatever category you fall into we at the On-line Forty-Niner would like to wish you happy holidays and thank you for reading.
