Editor retracts resignation
Those
moments when you ask yourself, “Will I regret
this in 20 years?” are not very pleasant
ones to experience. As students we seem
to do that all the time. But that is because
we are students. That is why we are here
to learn from our mistakes and grow from
them.
With this editorial I am trying to prevent
one of those moments from actually happening.
At least once in your life there comes a
time when you have to forget about all the
bullshit that life hands you and just do
what you really care to do.
An article ran in Tuesday’s On-line Forty-Niner
that expressed the feelings of the spring
semester editors that stepped down because
of the excessive turmoil in the journalism
department.
The article was by all means accurate however,
the comments that I made in my interview
were at a time when I was very heated. I
do stand by my words, in that my resignation
was meant to be a statement against the
way journalism students had been treated.
However, I realize that my words may have
been a little brash.
Yes, I was upset at the way things were
handled in the department and do think that
they could have been handled better. Unfortunately,
the damage has been done and I can’t dwell
on that any longer. My job as an editor
will not be any easier if I stray from my
ultimate intention, which is to put the
paper out every day.
For that reason, I have decided to retract
my resignation and continue as next semester’s
editor in chief. I really wanted to be able
to save face and stand by my decision proudly.
But I realize now — after a lot of reconsidering
— that decision would not be the best for
my future as a teacher and a journalist.
I spend a lot of time in the office that
we simply refer to as “the basement,” which
it rightfully is, and I have grown to care
deeply for this publication because we work
so hard to publish it every day. In hindsight,
I realize that I would be abandoning something
that I care so much for.
The On-line Forty-Niner has seen a lot of
hard times but this is just the beginning
in many steps to be taken to make the On-line
Forty-Niner an independent newspaper. But
I will be here to stand by the rights of
the First Amendment and make sure that the
Forty-Niner will be in good hands when I
graduate.
