Letter

I was saddened to see the On-line Forty-Niner’s
article on Proposition 52 buy into the opposing
campaign’s scare tactics. It has no proof
that fraud would increase. It looks at California
and sees a state full of people who are
eager to illegally vote.
Well, the other states that already use
Election Day voter registration have no
increased fraud. What are they really saying
about California? That all of our illegal
immigrants and felons are just waiting for
the opportunity to rush to the polls and
commit the crime of voting? Uh huh, right.
I see California full of potential legal
voters that would be more inclined to vote
if it weren’t a two-step process to get
to the poll booth. I know that many of my
fellow students here move twice a year or
more and lose track of registering. Sure
it’s not hard to remember to register, but
it’s easy to forget in our hectic schedules.
Look at the facts. The article states plainly
that Proposition 52 would up the requirements
to requiring identification to register
for the first time in California.
It’s proven to increase turnout, which is
something our democracy needs badly, as
a quarter to half of the population are
deciding for all of us who will be our representatives
and make our nation’s laws affecting our
economy, foreign policy, health, environment,
etc.
