Campus
Progressives strongly oppose new recreation
center
I am writing to voice my opinion on the
proposed building of a new recreation center
on campus. The student government is voting
on this proposal on Wednesday.
Student tuition is already high enough,
now there is a possibility of an added $150
for this proposed build.
In the upcoming state budget many departments
on campus, such as the library and maintenance,
will have their funds slashed.
I’d rather pay extra to help these departments
and their employees then build a pointless
recreation center. The fact is, tons of
places in the local area are available for
people to work out: Locally we have parks,
beaches, the physical education area on
campus, the YMCA nearby, Frogs at The Pyramid
(for those who can to afford it), the Belmont
Pool, etc.
Students are in need of both dorms and more
parking.
What I want to know is who are the business
interests and land developers pushing this
proposed recreation center idea on campus?
They’d love to develop over all the parks
and beaches and have hundreds of recreation
centers.
Already our campus has put itself in the
pocket of such corporations as Coca-Cola.
The educational atmosphere on campus is
being handed over to corporate marketers
who would like CSULB students to run up
giant credit card debts.
Does anyone else ever feel like they are
at a mall when they walk around campus?
The proposed recreation center looks like
just another corporate scam backed by opportunistic
student politicians.
What is happening to our campus? Or more
importantly, what is happening to our country?
