E-mail provides benefits

After signing up for a Campus Internet Account, CSULB students can obtain free Web space along with many other benefits.

According to Daniel E. Olsen, Technology Help Desk manager, CSULB has been facilitating Internet Accounts to students since 1996.

“As of right now, more than 25,000 students have signed up for Campus Internet Accounts,” Olsen said, “Students use the service, among other things, to communicate to instructors and other students.”

There are several benefits students gain by taking advantage of this service, including a free e-mail account; free dial-up Internet access, though all toll calls are the student’s responsibility; 25 megabytes of space for your own Web site and saved e-mail. And access to BeachBoard, a Web-based instructional tool used by many CSULB instructors, according to the help desk Web site.

Many students are already taking advantage of some of the services. For instance, undergraduate student Stan Paez has been using the service for the last three semesters.

“It is very convenient for me to use BeachBoard, it has being a good experience,“ Paez said. “I’m able to communicate with the instructor via BeachBoard about any problem that I encounter, whether I miss class hand outs or there have been changes in the class schedule.”

To begin using the free web space reserved for students, it is necessary to obtain a Campus Internet Account.

Students may do this by visiting http://www.csulb.edu/namemaster and following the instructions.

If by any chance students have difficulties, the Technology Help Desk Walk-in Service Center, located at LA5-361, can provide assistance and may be reached at 562-985-4959.

THD Walk-in Services helps students that have problems creating a new Internet account, such as resetting lost or forgotten passwords.

Olsen is updating the hours of operation for the THD Walk-In Service Center that are posted in the Web site.

The new hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

“We’re very glad to help any student that needs assistance,” Olsen said.

Before assistance is given, the THD requires for students to have their University ID with a current sticker.
