Registration
for winter classes is still available to
Cal State Long Beach students through University
College and Extension Services at the Foundation
Building.
The
winter session lasts between Jan. 2 to 21.
Current enrollment has reached 2,800 students.
Denis Arsenault, winter session program
administrator is optimistic on the enrollment
this year, and he expects to see more students
for class registrations.
“We
had 3,400 students enroll in last year’s
winter program and that is the highest enrollment
of all,” Arsenault said. “Traditionally,
it happens that students complete their
course work now in the fall semesters and
they finish finals, then they’ll start to
think about either retaking the class or
taking the class for graduation in winter
session.”
Courses
offered in winter still require students
to meet with instructors for 45 hours of
contact time. Instead of class once or twice
per week in the fall or spring semester,
students in winter classes meet with instructors
intensively about four to five times per
week.
“Some
students love it, but some students have
difficulty devoting their time for that
academic period,” Arsenault added. “For
students, it can be good and bad. The good
part is the very short duration of time.”
All
students are eligible to register for up
to four units during winter session. The
tuition will be $130 per unit, which is
generally higher than normal for local students,
but lower than normal for out-of-state and
international students.
“We’ve
tried to price our winter session according
to what is been charged on the state side,”
Arsenault said. “Although we are self-support
organization.”
Most
campus services will be open during winter
session including the University Bookstore,
food services, housing and the library.
The
opening hours for the Bookstore is Monday
to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library,
is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through
Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. for Saturday. Food services
includes The Bakery, Taco Bell, Deli, CBA
Cart and Outpost.
Campus
housing will be available for current dormitory
residents only. Students who wish to stay
during winter break must complete their
license agreement with the $157.50 application
fee before Friday. Housing and Residential
will provide meals to students during this
period.
