Velvet fit for queens

By Janelle L. Burns

Special to the On-line Forty-Niner

To expound upon my winter and holiday pick, which was velvet, I gave myself the assignment of tracking down velvet’s “A List” pieces. I was amazed that there was so much out there! With all the options, everyone will be able to find something they love. Let me assure you that you won’t be disappointed if you go the velvet route this holiday season.

Through my findings, I give Express honorable mention. This chain offers a few velvet pieces, mostly tank shells in darker hues. Shells, like camisoles, support an outfit but don’t offer a focal point. For those of you who are unsure or don’t want a dramatic statement, try layering with the shell as your base.

For those of you who want to treat yourself to a little glamour, head over to Macy’s. This department store definitely takes the cake for the biggest selection and best styles of velvet. Right now they have dresses, pants, tops and skirts, take your pick.

The Kenneth Cole line has black cotton velveteen pants, velvet textured corduroy pants and a few styles of velvet skirts. All of which can be mixed and matched to dress up tops you already have, thus promising a long shelf life in your wardrobe.

Studio M, a pricey little line carried at Macy’s, offers velvet dresses. Two styles, one in classic black, and one with a red flower print velvet pattern on black mesh. Very sensuous and perfect for a special holiday dinner or evening at the holiday philharmonic.

Lastly, the goldmine of holiday dressing representing velvet galore, the chic INC line. The greatest thing about INC is the value. Their clothes are a bargain because they look designer but don’t carry the hefty price tag.

INC will give you tons of jacquard, pinstriped and tuxedo pants. All of which you can pair with the right velvet piece and look dressed enough to attend a semi-formal event without going the dress route — these also stretch for big interviews that some graduating seniors may have coming up and are always a wardrobe standby. As far as tops go, you will find tunic styles with velvet trim and gothic sleeves, and plenty of other options in mesh with velvet detailing. The best skirt I found is their fully rutched, black velvet, satin trimmed skirt.

Get out there and enjoy the holiday dress up game, after all, wasn’t dress up our favorite pastime as little girls?
