L.B. rocks 2003

Out with the old and in with the new, a statement many students have probably said once or twice in their lives. But it never rings more true than on New Year’s Eve when the past is about to end and the future, just beginning.

If traffic or flying discourages students from getting away to dazzling, partying, never sleeping cities like Las Vegas or New York, then Long Beach provides many opportunities to ring in the New Year in style.

For those students who are on a budget and are looking to celebrate New Year’s Eve differently, come aboard the Spirit Marine or the Queen Mary for about $80 per person.

Spirit Cruises will be having two public cruises on New Year’s Eve departing from Shoreline Village. One cruise will include prime rib and marinated chicken dinner from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at $49.50 per person. The other cruise, which will be from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., will include a special Italian buffet for $75 per person.

The Queen Mary offers eight parties with live music for all ages from top 40, big band, country and jazz, to retro, ’70s disco and hot Latin dance music, and dancing from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. for $79 per person. There will also be a fireworks display to conclude the evening.

For students whose budget allows for more of a splurge, the Adventures at Sea New Year’s Eve Cruise aboard the Dream Fleet yacht or the New Year’s Eve Murder Mystery aboard the Grand Romance might be an option.

The Adventure’s at Sea provides an unforgettable experience aboard a heated yacht with the opportunity to see the annual Long Beach Harbor fireworks display. Dancing to the music of a live band, gourmet dining and champagne toast is available from $165 per person.

The New Year’s Eve Murder Mystery aboard the Grand Romance is $150 per person and includes a four-course dinner, cruise, champagne toast and special performance of “Alibi Aboard” by Killer Entertainment and dancing. The cruises are on an authentic paddlewheel riverboat in the Long Beach Harbor.

If cruises do not suit the college students’ fancy or budget, restaurants in the area are hosting nice dinners, many with entertainment, which will help start off 2003 in good spirits.

The Madison is offering dinner and a swing band from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Frenchy’s Bistro is offering three five-course meals and music at 5 p.m. for $75 and at 8 and 10 p.m. for $85 per person.

Babouch Moroccan is offering food, holiday party and decorations, belly dancing and a tarot card reading.

Last but not least, The Skyroom is hosting two New Year’s Eve dinners, a five-course gourmet dinner at 5:30 p.m., and an eight-course gourmet dinner and live swing dance music by an orchestra at 8:30 p.m.
