Holiday parade

By Todd Leland

On-line Forty-Niner

A dark canal walled on each side by an endless parade of lights and imagination. Disneyland you say, no. In fact, the holiday spirit can be found much closer to Cal State Long Beach.

Lights are strung across the rooftops, balconies and front yards of the homes that sit upon the canals of Naples Island. The imaginative designs used to create such dazzling confections of lights belong to the homeowners that live along the canals.

Two methods of transportation can be used to see these decorative displays of Christmas cheer.

The first includes a drive or means of alternative transportation and walk the public walkways that line the front of the homes. This is truly a great way to see the lights and festivities. Many people stroll the canals during the holidays for a bundle of reasons.

Some people even run to get a head start against the stress of the holiday season. In any case dress warm, the night air around the canals and near Alamitos Bay tends to produce a sharp chill.

The second is to travel the canals by boat. In some cases there may be a friend or relative that will take everyone out their boat and enjoy the sites. But for those people seeking water transportation look no further than the Gondola Getaway.

The Gondola Getaway supplies a fantastic service to those looking for a romantic holiday experience or to anyone that wants to be amongst family and friends in a boisterous holiday atmosphere.

The Gondola Getaway can take from two to 14 people on any one of its fleet of Italian-style gondolas. The gondolas offer a rare comfort that goes unmatched by any other type of boat on the bay or in the canals.

The camaraderie among the gondoliers will only build upon the sense of elation that passengers feel while aboard the gondolas. A gondolier may even belt out a Christmas or Italian tune to liven the mood.

A season of light and holiday cheer will go incomplete without seeing the sites of the Naples Island canals, be it by foot or gondola.
