Boyfriends
need the practical gift

Gift
giving is supposed to be fun and provide
the sense that he or she is doing something
good for someone else. For many, however,
the gift giving season can be stressful
when looking for “the perfect gift.”
Many guys believe girls are the hardest
ones to shop for, but it really goes both
ways. Girlfriends, for the most part, are
easy to please because they are just happy
their boyfriends remembered to give them
a gift.
On the other hand, boyfriends expect to
receive gifts they can put to use. Not many
guys appreciate getting a lot of knickknacks
or keepsakes for gifts.
Derek Ward, a senior criminal justice major
at Cal State Long Beach, said he would appreciate
knowing that his girlfriend took the time
to get to know his personality and the kind
of gift he would enjoy.
“The ideal gift from my girlfriend would
be a dog,” said Ward, who has been with
his girlfriend for a little over a year.
“Something that would keep me entertained
and that’s meaningful at the same time.”
“The reason it’s so hard for girls to shop
for their boyfriends is because you know
you’re looking for something in particular,
but you don’t really know what it is,” said
Danielle Locks, a child development major
at CSULB.
It is supposed to be the thought that counts
when it comes to giving gifts, but many
people have a hard time getting into that
spirit. Girls can sometimes be concerned
that their gift will look inadequate to
their boyfriend.
Locks said she worries that she will discover
one day that her boyfriend has exchanged
her presents for something “that better
suits his needs. In other words, what he
really wanted and didn’t get,” she said.
No matter how long a girl has been in a
relationship, the gift bears the same importance.
For a newly formed relationship it may be
best to stick with ideas involving DVDs,
CDs or clothing.
These are more impersonal gifts, yet someone
can not really go wrong as long as you know
what the person would really like.
“Guys are hard to shop for because girls
always go shopping and see things they want
so they can drop hints,” Carla Valdez, a
psychology major at CSULB, said. “Guys never
go to the mall, so you don’t really know
what they want because they don’t really
know what they want.”
Valdez said she believes the best gift for
a boyfriend depends on the guy because guys
are all very different.
“I usually pick something I know he likes
but that he also needs,” she said.
“Guys are definitely harder to shop for
than girls.”
When shopping this season remember that
everyone is going through the same state
of confusion about what “the perfect gift”
will be this year.
