Organizations educate students

By Yoshinori Okada

Representatives from internationally-related organizations lined up their table Wednesday at the Speaker’s Platform of Cal State Long Beach giving opportunities for students to gain information about them.

Representatives from Amnesty International, Human Dignity Program, Physicians for Social Responsibility, National Conference for Community and Justice Peace Corps, displayed pamphlets of information on the tables.

These organizations came together at as part of International Education Week, which is aimed to raise the profile of international education, according to Linda Olson Levy, special programs coordinator of the International Education Week committee.

“In this world that grows ever smaller, and with the impending serious world conflict on the horizon, it is essential that people be educated about the issues,” Olson Levy said. “How they will affect, not only them but their countrymen and fellow world citizens.

“The purpose of this event is to educate the student community about the various organizations that are involved in some way with international activities, volunteering and service,” Levy said.

The representatives from the organizations handed out pamphlets and, in some cases, application packets for volunteer opportunities.

“We are just trying to build awareness to the students about the Peace Corps and give opportunities that they might want to pursue,” said Julie Hanson, a recruitment coordinator.

Tina Sary, a sophomore international studies student, was walking along the tables talking with some representatives. She said she is interested in joining an international organization such as the Peace Corps.

“I liked the event,” Sary said. “But it would have been better if it was bigger.”

Besides those international agencies, representatives from study abroad were present encouraging the students to study abroad.
