Judiciary still withholds senator-at-large seat

By Todd Leland

The Senate enjoyed a relatively uneventful meeting Wednesday, compared to the events of the past few weeks, when the Associated Students Judiciary announced a preliminary hearing for the senator-at-large position for the campus cultural community.

The Judiciary, lead by Chief Justice Luis Pena, must first determine the validity of Associated Students Inc. President Danny Vivian’s veto concerning the primary election before the Senate can proceed with a re-election.

“We are having a preliminary hearing Nov. 25,” Pena announced to the Senate.

Senate Chairman and A.S.I. Vice President Shahrokh Sheik informed the Senate that the date of the hearing falls on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

“We will not be having a Senate meeting on Nov. 27,” Sheik informed the Senate and gallery. “The two weeks should give everyone plenty of time to look over and understand the case.”

The delay of the re-election due to the Judiciary proceedings has not stopped the candidates, Brian Roberts and Alejandro Negrete, from attending and participating in the Senate meetings.

Roberts and Negrete are each paying close attention to the campus cultural groups and are making reports about those groups to the Senate.

In comments regarding the re-election, Sen. Ricardo Carlos said that the subject of the senator-at-large position has weighed on him in the past weeks and he wanted to let the other senators know how he felt.

“We are getting caught up in bylaws and procedures,” Carlos said. “We’re here to put the students first, that is what this organization is about.”
When the Senate reconvenes on Dec. 14, the Judiciary should have a decision clearing the way for either the reappointment of Roberts into his senate seat or a defining re-election.

“This meeting was a little slow,” Sheik commented. “Wait until our next meeting that is going to be something.”

In other news Shelley Levenson, commissioner of sports and spirit, informed the Senate of an upcoming Cal State Long Beach men’s basketball game against the University of California at Los Angeles on Dec. 8 at 1 p.m.

Also, Sen. Kelly Lake from the College of Health and Human Services informed the Senate that she would be unable to perform the duties of her senate seat next semester.

“I am unable to fill this senate seat next year due to a schedule conflict that I am unable to change,” Lake remarked.

Lake then recommended that the Senate begin making arrangements to fill her seat for the spring semester.
