Resume workshops help with job search

The Career Development Center gave Cal State Long Beach alumni the opportunity Monday to update their resumes and cover letters in preparation to obtain jobs.

The center, which presented the Alumni Workshop, prepared to help alumni and current students write resumes.

Several alumni have come back to CSULB in positions to represent their companies in the Job Fairs. They credit their achievements with the relationships they obtained with the center.

Anh Duong, employed by BP West Coast Products, LLC, formerly known as ARCO, got her job by presenting her resume to the company at the CSULB Job Fair.

She represented her company at this year’s Job Fair as a recruiter.

“I submitted my resume at the Job Fair last year,” she said. “I have been working with BP since July.”

Working with the center and meeting other students can also be rewarding when it comes to jobs. Anne Bautista and Gus Tarantino work together as recruiters who travel to the different job fairs. They were recruiting at this year’s Job Fair, and explained how they started working together on the Job Fair circuit.

“My boss needed to hire another recruiter, so I recommended Gus,” Bautista said. “We had a business class together at CSULB, and he was working as a child care worker in group homes.”

Two other workshops will be offered by the center.  One is the Electronic Job Search, which will be held at noon today. This workshop will enable the students to learn how to access jobs on the computer.

Randy Yee, of Target, will present the other workshop, Sailing Through the Interviews, at 11 a.m. Friday.

All of the events that are provided by the center are free to current students, but alumni must pay $25 per year for the services. Events are held in Brotman Hall.

Special accommodations will be provided to those students who request them in advance. They can call the center 48 hours before the event at (562) 985-8468.

Staff members of the center encourage students, to call for appointments for any services that will help them with their future concerns.
