Smorgasbord of sports and games

By Alexis Kindig

In an effort to get students interested in campus activities and sports clubs, several on-campus organizations will sponsor the second annual Smorgasport on Friday.

Associated Students Inc., the Alumni Association, Student Health Services and the University Student Union will be among those sponsoring and coordinating the all-night sports event.

The event, which is free to students with CSULB identification, is intended to raise students’ awareness of sports clubs on campus and to get them involved in on-campus activities, according to Rita Hayes, club sports director.

Hayes said all the CSULB sports clubs will be present and some will even compete against each other in sporting events.

The men’s crew team will challenge the men’s hockey team in basketball, and the women’s crew team will play basketball against the women’s soccer team.

Other activities will include hip-hop dancing, volleyball, a three-on-three basketball tournament and a rock-climbing wall.

According to Lisa Molina-De la Loza, the USU games area will have free bowling, billiards and chess.

There will also be two bands, three K-Beach disc jockeys, and a barbecue.  A nurse from Student Health Services will be in attendance to discuss sexual health.

Hayes said Smorgasport was very successful last year when it drew 500 to 600 students, but she says she expects to double or triple that number this year. The idea for Smorgasport came from other campuses that have similar all-night sports events.

Beach Patrol points will be awarded to students who get their identification cards swiped at the event. The points are awarded at various activities throughout the semester, and students achieving a certain number of points can receive prizes at the end of the semester, according to Hayes,.

Smorgasport will be held in the USU games area and the Goldmine Gym from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday.  Students are encouraged to wear workout clothes.
