CSULB set to be online fall 2003

By Ramon Torres
Daily Forty-Niner

Cal State Long Beach is set to implement a new self-service system that will allow students to access their records on the Internet.

CSULB is participating in a systemwide project called the Common Management System, which is composed of three parts: human resources, financial systems, which have already been successfully implemented this year, and the new student system that is going to be ready for fall 2003, said Tom Enders, assistant vice president Enrollment Services at CSULB.

"[It] sounds pretty good and it is better than being on the phone," said Simon Oh, a senior accountant and finance double major. "I'm not sure about [student records] because it would be easy for anyone to access our records."

Three California State University campuses -- Fresno, Sonoma and Maritime -- were chosen to implement the student system first and CSULB was approved to be next.

The new system will allow students to access their records on the Internet with a unique identification and password, Enders said. The first modules of the new system started last month by processing admission applications for next fall. Academic departments will begin preparing the course schedule for the fall 2003 next month.

"It will make it a lot more convenient for students," said Amanda Versluys, a senior journalism major. "But I'd like to know more about how secure the system is."

Students will be able to access some of the self-service functions April through May when registering for the fall 2003 semester, Enders said.

"We are utilizing our current student system for spring and summer 2003 so we will be looking to implement most of the self-service functions in about a year when all the records from our current system have been transferred to the new system," he said. "We hope that giving students access to their degree progress report on the Web will greatly facilitate planning and promote timely progress to a degree."

Functions on the Web include:

  • View the course catalog.
  • Search the schedule of classes including selecting days and times of a class. The schedule of classes search will always be the most up-to-date information including courses or sections added by departments and including current seat availability.
  • View enrollment appointment.
  • Register for classes.
  • View class schedule.
  • View financial aid status and awards.
  • View student account.
  • Pay account balance with a credit card.
  • Update mailing address.
  • View holds.
  • View transfer credit summary.
  • View degree progress report showing what degree requirements have been met and which are still remaining.
  • View grades and unofficial transcripts.

Some of these self-service functions will also be available over the telephone phone, such as registering for classes or listening to class schedules, Enders said.
