Disney recruits designers

Walt Disney’s Imagi-Nations has come to Cal State Long Beach to recruit talented students.

Imagi-Nations, a university design competition created and sponsored by Walt Disney Imagineering, promotes diversity and maintains an environment that fosters new ideas that can reflect Disney’s community, said Nancy Soliman, Walt Disney Imagineering representative.

The 2003 Imagi-Nations design competition information session, sponsored by Walt Disney Imagineering and the CSULB Career Development Center, was held Monday at the North Campus Center Conference Room.

“We want the people who built those parks, and built those rides and attractions to be reflective of the kind of people that come in and are guests in our park,” Soliman said. “This competition has been around for the past 10 years, but this is the first time we’re presenting it at this university.”

Juniors, seniors and graduate students can entered the competition as an individual or as a team, but must be from a participating engineering or architecture association or a university student majoring in one of the following: fine arts, digital arts, theatrical design and production or creative writing, according to the information given at the event.

Employer relations coordinator at the CSULB Career Development Center Jina Flores, said they were exited to have Walt Disney Imagineering at CSULB because they have never recruited at this campus before.

“The whole purpose is to have the students design either a theme park or new attraction and then from there it could be a possible position with Disney,” Flores said. “So hopefully it will open doors to other possible recruitment.”

“I think it’s good for a lot of a minorities who wouldn’t have the opportunity to get into this field otherwise,” graphic design student Jennifer Mcmillan said. “It is an opportunity for us to get in, and kind of get our feet wet and get an opportunity to work for Disney.”

Submitted ideas must be original and only one entry per team or individual will be accepted. Preliminary entries will be accepted beginning Jan. 1, 2003 and must be received by Jan. 31.

Participants must be full-time, junior or senior level college students as of June 2. Teams must consist of at least two, but no more than four students.

Students seeking more information should contact the Career Development Center.
