Students
are raving about the new computer site located
on the second floor of the University Student
Union, near the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.
Anytime during the day, seats are always
occupied by students.
“CampusLink is dope, I use it every day
when I have a break or during my lunch,”
Jason Reynolds, creative writing major,
said.
CampusLink
is a service in the University Student Union
that provides Internet access. It became
officially available for Cal State Long
Beach students during the beginning of the
spring semester of 2002. CampusLink is sponsored
by the Los Angeles Times and Gateway.
“This has been a bonus for students because
there are no open computers in the second
floor of our campus,” said Sylvana Ciscero,
assistant director of marketing and promotions
of the USU. “So this is a great opportunity
for students to stop and check their e-mail.”
The CampusLink center has five computers,
a phone to contact CSULB departments and
displayed bus services, along with an abundance
of brochures, pamphlets and maps.
Cicero is attempting to expand CampusLink
to other locations of the campus. However,
according to Cicero, this decision rests
on CampusLink, which requires placing these
stations in high volume areas.
The marketing and promotions department
intends to expand the uses of CampusLink
by implementing software that notifies students
of future campus plans and events.
“Our goal is to put in future planning events
software so students can look up where and
when events are going on,” Cicero said.
In addition, CampusLink will be installing
a DVD player for each workstation. By implementing
a DVD, students will be able to view past
Cal State Long Beach athletic games, events,
meetings and campus concerts.
“This is really convenient because it beats
waiting in long lines at the library to
just check your e-mail,” Sara Tamers, senior
history major, said.
“Since we put CampusLink in our campus,
I could go there anytime and find someone
using the system,” Cicero said.
“I think CampusLink has been one of the
better new things that Cal State Long Beach
has invested in our campus,” Tamers said.
