A
broken steam pipe caused a flood in the
Engineering and Computer Science Building,
forcing students and faculty to evacuate
at approximately 9 a.m. Monday.
The
steam pipe broke on the third floor of the
ECS building, which set off the sprinklers
and fire alarm. Five Long Beach Fire Department
engines were dispatched to the scene prepared
for a fire, but they only found water.
“The call went in as a fire because the
steam was thought to be smoke, that is why
all the engines are here,” firefighter Casey
Carrigan said.
“There
is a lot of water on the lower three floors,
so it might take a while to clean it up.
We still have to check for damage.”
Many curious students and faculty crowded
in front of the building wondering what
happened and if classes would be cancelled.
“I have a class to teach at 9:30, but it
doesn’t seem like its going to happen,”
said engineering professor Jack Alanen.
“[Fire Department] told me that the building
will be shut down until at least 1 p.m.”
Computer science major Stephanie Webb saw
the flood situation as time off from her
class.
“My computer lab is in that building, and
we meet at 12:30,” Webb said. “It’s sad
that the building was damaged but the accident
gives me some time off from class.”
