Career services help students

When graduation is just around the corner, seniors and graduate students in the College of Education need to have a clear idea of what their choices are in the job market.

The Los Angeles Unified School District will be among the many organizations present at the Job Fair today. The LAUSD will be offering, internships and full- and part-time positions.    The LAUSD is looking for qualified and motivated teacher candidates. Teachers for all areas are welcome to apply but there is a great demand for math and special education.

Educational Career Services Director Judi Walker said that the College of Education has a liberal studies degree, which students work on if they are planning to be elementary teachers, but most people come to this college already having different degrees.

“If you want to teach math or English, you need to have a degree in math or English in order to obtain a single subject teaching credential,” Walker said.

Undergraduate Miwa Kanako, who knows where to go after getting her psychology degree, feels that it is good for undecided students to have many options.

“I think it is wonderful for students to have the option of looking into other areas after getting your baccalaureate degree,” she said.
Educational Career Services helps students, as they finish their credential and to look for job opportunities, Walker said.

“Actually, there are a lot of job opportunities for teachers, in general. But science, math and special education are probably the most in demand,” she said.
