For
criminal justice majors and others looking
for jobs related to law enforcement, the
future looks bright.
Harvey Morley, a criminal justice professor
and internship coordinator, said the prospects
for criminal justice majors look extremely
good at the local, state and federal levels.
Morley said that local law enforcement salaries
are approximately $40,000 a year.
According to the Long Beach Police Department
Web site, the agency is looking for police
officers, a position with a salary of $4,107
to $5,086 a month.
Many job opportunities are available for
criminal justice students, Morley said.
Majors can expect to work for local law
enforcement agencies as well as federal
agencies such as the FBI, the CIA and Border
Patrol.
Morley said that federal baggage screeners
are in demand at the moment to work at airports
and agencies the Federal Aviation Administration
is looking for trained security officers
in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks
last year.
Federal screeners generally make more than
$20,000 a year, Morley said. The Palm Springs
and Burbank airports just received their
first federal screeners and Los Angeles
International airport will have them soon.
People who are not criminal justice majors
also have good job prospects with law enforcement
agencies. Those who are fluent in a second
language, for example, are also in demand.
Several law enforcement agencies will be
at the Job Fair, looking for new recruits.
This list includes the Long Beach, Los Angeles.
Alhambra and Las Vegas police departments
and the San Bernardino Probation Office.
