Got problems? Visit women’s center

Staffed by the students and made for students, the Women’s Resource Center continues to provide resources for every need. From sexual assault crisis intervention to supplying hugs when someone needs them, the center welcomes students with open arms.

“The Women’s Resource Center is about women and all parts of women’s lives,” Lynne Coenen, assistant director of the center, said. “It can range from what they are going to eat for breakfast to how they are going to take care of their families.”

Primarily a networking and support center, the WRC allows women to meet other women who can lend a sympathetic ear, give directions around campus or eat lunch within the women’s lounge, which is open to all students.

Low-cost, professional counseling references are available, as well as opportunities to join a free affinity group. The affinity groups are led by a faculty member and consist of women with similar interests coming together to discuss relevant issues.

“Some popular affinity groups in the past have been Sister Friends, an African-American group, Latinas Who Need Us and Creative Souls for artistic people,” said Megan Gilhooley, a student who works in the center.

The range of services the center provides is wide. Students can make class arrangements using the open phone, write papers on the open computer or even store their lunches in the refrigerator.

Internships are available at the center as well, “Intersections,” a career fair where professional women come to campus and make themselves available to students in need of advice or guidance.

According to Coenen, men are also welcome to the available resource material in the center. Men often staff the Self Defense Awareness programs the WRC offers.

“The center is here to help men understand women’s issues. Men also come to us because a woman in their lives needs help,” Coenen said.

No matter what the reason for a visit to the Women’s Resource Center, students will always be greeted with a warm smile and a helpful hand. All of their services are free of charge and available to students, staff and faculty.

The WRC is “just a terrific place,” Coenen said. “We have a great deal of fun here.”

The Women’s Resource Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. For further information, call the center at (562) 985-8576 or visit its Web site for a calendar of events at www.csulb.edu/centers/wrc. The center is located in LA3-105.
