Students
attending Cal State Long Beach this fall
will once again be treated to a semester
of concerts, movies and lectures set up
by the University Student Union Program
Council.
“We have not decided what performers and
movies we will be promoting yet,” Program
Assistant Kemi Are said. “We have a meeting
later this week and the schedule should
be set by the end of the month.”
The schedule that the Program Council promotes
features the popular noontime concerts,
movie sneak previews and lectures.
“The Program Council is made up of mostly
student volunteers,” Are said. “There are
paid positions, but most of the people here
are students volunteering their time.”
Students volunteer their services to promote
the mission of the Program Council, multicultural
enhancement and sensitivity towards race,
creed, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation,
age and physical ability.
The Program Council feels it provides a
balanced variety of activities such as visual
and performing arts, films, lectures, social
events, comedy and novelty acts which are
diverse, entertaining and educational.
We hold meetings every week that any student
can attend and become part of the USU Program
Council,” Are said
The Program Council usually holds its meetings
every Tuesday at 2 p.m. The USU Program
Council Office is located in USU-256.
Noontime concerts are scheduled to start
Sept. 3 and play through Dec. 11. The concerts
are held on the southwest terrace and the
south plaza.
The movies and sneak previews will play
weekly from Sept. 17 through Nov. 21. Movies
and sneak previews play at 5 p.m. and 8
p.m. with an occasional second showing at
9 p.m. The films are shown in the Beach
Auditorium on the first floor of the USU.
The movies are shown in 35mm format and
the theater has capacity for up to 200 moviegoers.
“Sneak previews are free to students,” Are
said. “Old movies that have been or are
already in theaters cost students $1.”
The Program Council plans to present educational,
motivational speakers, workshops and other
types of lectures. The council encourages
students to participate in the planning
and recommendation of speakers for the academic
year.
“We still have not decided who will be speaking
at the lectures,” Are said. “That is something
we will talk about at our first couple of
meetings in the next few weeks.”
The Program Council also promotes annual
events such as the Week of Welcome activities
with the Associated Students Inc and the
Smorgasport in the fall semester, Poets
Lounge, Battle of the Beats: Freestyle MC
contest, Hip Hop Fashion show, Safe Sex
Workshop, Kwanzaa Celebration.
