Health Services offers affordable and quality

By Miguel Lopez

The Student Health Center is not only close but provides all types of health care services while not overcharging.

Health Services provides quality care to Cal State Long Beach students through the $35 health fee paid for each semester through tuition. While Health Services suggests appointments, walk-ins are welcomed.

Some of the free basic services provided by the Health Services are outpatient treatment of sudden or average illness and injury. Free dermatology, orthopedics and psychiatry are available by referral from a Health Services doctor or nurse also.

“Most of our services are free to students,” said Clinical Director and Nurse, Larry Harvey. “Usually the only fees paid are for medicine or lab tests.”

Women’s health such as annual examinations, Pap smears, related lab test and contraceptive services are free except for a small fee for pharmacy and lab work.

Basic medical care for men’s health issues, such as illness and sexual health, is free as well. However, a small fee will be charged for pharmacy and some lab work once again.
The Health Resource Center is located within the Student Health Center on the second floor, room 268.

Prescriptions, over the counter medications and contraceptives cost slightly lower than local pharmacy prices.

Laboratory tests at Health Services are available when medically indicated and ordered by a Health Services doctor or nurse. The basic lab service is free, but outside labs are at the Health Services cost $1 or more.

According to Harvey, students like the fact that everything that occurs at the Student Health Center is confidential.

“When students fill out the information sheet they can indicate if it’s a personal matter so that only the student and the Doctor know the problem,” Harvey said.

The Health Resource Center provides students with more detailed health information than the Student Health Center offers. Programs, services and workshops are offered to increase health awareness.

Appointments can be made to see a doctor at the center by calling the Student Health Center.

Sexual Health Awareness Workshop is offered through the center, which is required for females looking to obtain prescription birth control from the Health Services. The workshop has to be attended before the prescription is given. The first Sexual Health Awareness Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday Sept. 10.

The fall semester hours for the center are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, please call (562) 985-1638.
