Cafes: a stimulating environment for students

Finding a place to actually get studying done can be hard for many students.  Fortunately, Long Beach has a variety of places for people to go and find the place that will work best for them.

Kerri Ewing, a senior art major at Cal State Long Beach, said she likes to study at Portfolio Café & Gallery on Fourth Street in Long Beach.  She said it has a very relaxing atmosphere with comfortable chairs, artwork and jazz music that plays in the background.

“It’s a good place to study. It reminds me of the Friends Coffee Shop, but not as noisy,” Ewing said.

Portfolio offers two rooms and an outside patio.

“We offer a lot to help make it easier for students to keep studying here,” said Josh Wilson, an employee at Portfolio.

Wilson said Portfolio also offers a variety of food, coffee and an environment away from school.

Inez Coquereau, a liberal studies major at CSULB, said she has studied at The Press Room, located in the University Student Union on campus, a couple of times.  She said she enjoys the lounge area it offers.

Coquereau said The Press Room has a pleasant setting with nice lamps, soft music playing in the background and it gives students a break from the neon lights.

Other popular study places students go to that are not far from school are Starbucks and It’s A Grind, which are both located in the traffic circle on Pacific Coast Highway.  These places are equipped with an atmosphere for getting things done.
