Personalize holiday gifts with a monogram

Janelle L. Burns - Fashionably Tuesday

With Thanksgiving officially out of the way, it’s getting down to crunch time to find the perfect holiday gift for everyone on your list. If you want to give a fashionably stylish gift, something sure to please everyone, keep reading.

The magic gift mentioned above actually isn’t an item at all — it’s something you have done to an item that makes it the perfect gift for anyone. This ingenious component for a great gift is a monogram.

The single most luxurious, classic and customized thing you can do is to monogram something. Almost all fabrics can be embroidered — the usual process for monogramming. Anything from cotton to leather can be successfully embroidered.

The best aspect of monogramming is choice. You choose an item to be monogrammed and you choose the size, color and style of the monogram itself. It is a foolproof customization process that polishes off anything.

There are many different styles of monograms. The most classic is the three initial style. The first letter of the last name is in the middle, with the first letter of the first and middle names on either side. For example, my name is monogrammed as: JBL. Typically the middle letter is a bit bigger than the outside two.

Another popular style uses the first and last initials only. Usually this type of monogram is staggered (almost diagonal), and the letters are the same size. This is especially good for someone who doesn’t have a middle name or if the buyer is unsure of someone’s middle name.

The last type I recommend is the single letter monogram. A single letter looks great on everything and the person’s first or last initial can be used. This style is done in an uppercase letter and looks more casual than the formal three-letter monogram.

The hardest part of this process is choosing an item for someone. Just think of something they would normally use and monogram it. For dad, grandpa or anyone into sports: monogram golf or gym towels or an equipment bag. For mom or grandma: monogram cloth napkins for formal dining, guest hand towels or light slippers. For a sister or girlfriend: monogram a makeup bag or stylish tote bag. For anyone: monogram a robe, luggage, pillowcases, pajama set, travel bag, laundry bags, towels, blankets and throws.

There are many more options out there — just take the persons’ lifestyle into consideration and give a customized gift that’s sure to please.
