Local bars, pubs draw football fans

Football season is finally here and fans everywhere are looking forward to the NFL’s opening weekend.

This season also marks the 32nd consecutive year of Monday Night Football, which will air on ABC Monday night starting at 6 p.m.

The first regular season Monday night game will feature the defending Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots, challenged by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cal State Long Beach students who did not manage to pack enough fun into their weekend can enjoy another night out with friends in what has become and icon for the National Football League. But where do students go for such an occasion?

A variety of restaurants and bars close to CSULB may attract football fans and social connoisseurs looking for action on Monday night.

One such tavern is Limericks in Long Beach at 5734 E. 2nd St. in Long Beach. The bar sports nine televisions, including two big screens. They also offer a complimentary “pig-skin buffet” on which they display a variety of foods including roasted pig. For the beer lover, Limericks has a fine selection of beers on tap, including Guinness.

Cirivello’s, another option at 4115 Viking Way in Long Beach, has more than 50 televisions including one with a 13-foot screen. Happy hour is in effect before and after every game. The restaurant also has a VIP lounge and drink specials.

For the ladies, Cirivello’s offers a “Mr. Monday Night” pageant on the third Monday of each month. A ladies pageant is held on the second and fourth Monday of each month where prizes are given away.

Cirivello’s is a great place to come watch the game, said owner Angelo Picarelli.

“There isn’t a bad seat in the house,” Picarelli said.

Bring identification because Cirivello’s is 21 and over only.

For those in the mood for something different on Monday night, Tsunami sushi bar in at 17218 Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach is a great spot. The restaurant is open to all ages and happy hour runs all night with food and drink specials. Tsunami has four televisions and the game is always on.

Other places in Long Beach to watch the game are Tracy’s, 5511 E. Spring St. in Long Beach, which has 13 televisions and The Prospector, 2400 E. 7th St. in Long Beach, sporting four televisions, and happy hour food and drink specials.
