Using
bright colors, different dimensions, and
3-D techniques the Faculty Biennial 2002
exhibit presents a display that hits with
an unexpected twist. The University Art
Museum is showing the exhibit filled with
art from the faculty of Cal State Long Beach.
The exhibition provides the local and campus
community with an opportunity to see new
works by long-time associates and faculty
of the art department.
“[The exhibit] is also a time when we faculty
get to visit and see what is new in each
other’s development. This encourages appreciation,
and understanding of how various approaches
to creativity might inform their teaching
as well,” said Marie Thibeault, of the painting
program at CSULB.
Showcases offer the community and the university
a wide range of campus talent, from paintings,
drawings and photography to ceramics, sculptures
and graphic design.
“[The biennial] is open to any teaching
in fine arts,” said Mary Kay Lombino, curator
of exhibitions. “It is a nice surprise to
see all the submissions.”
The UAM works to display the right amount
of art to fill the museum in and open space
helps add to the creative air in the exhibit.
With different size rooms and lighting effects,
the UAM provides a surreal and tranquil
experience.
“I look forward to the faculty show, which
happens every two years in the fall,” said
Thibeault. “It gives the students a valuable
opportunity to look at the creative work
of the artists they are studying with and
they are able to ask questions about the
ideas, construction and creative process.”
The Faculty Biennial exhibit will run through
Dec. 15. The museum hours are Tues. to Thurs.
12 to 8 p.m., Fri. to Sun. 12 to 5 p.m.,
and closed on Monday and University holidays.
