Comfortable winter coats vary in fit, texture

For the months to come the best accessory to have is a coat — the look and feel of the texture is what it’s all about. I’m not talking about a simple run-of-the-mill, fuzzy, feel-good coat either. This winter expect to see not only one, but two different textures layering each other for the ultimate feel-fabulous coat.

Texture simply refers to anything that doesn’t look flat. The most popular textures in coats of the moment are: fur — faux of course — corduroy, micro-fleece, shearling and sherpa — the fluffy crème or white colored stuff that looks like lamb fur.

The most common multi-textured coat I’ve spotted is the beige-toned fleece and sherpa combination. The sherpa pokes out at the collar, sleeves and in the lining, creating a cozy contrast. A coat such as this would be a great buy for someone who needs a jacket to work with her whole wardrobe. Beige tones go great with denim, brown and black. Whereas a brown coat looks displaced when worn with black and vice versa.

If anyone is concerned about looking too woodsy in sherpa, find a fitted version. Wearing a fitted coat automatically polishes up an outfit and you won’t feel like a boxy lumberjack in a shapeless coat.

If anyone wants a little more glam or trend in a coat, look for faux fur. Mink coats have always been a luxury for fashion hounds; perhaps that’s why fur emanates glamorous nostalgia. Fur trimmings function best on duster sweaters. The sweater contrast dresses down the fur to make it wearable with jeans, and the fur dresses up the sweater to make it wearable with a dress, skirt or trousers.

If a full fur jacket is desired, then go the cropped or vested route. Unless someone is stepping out of a limo with a 6-carat diamond ring and a Gucci bag, floor length fur is an overkill to an everyday outfit. A little goes a long way in the fur department.

For all the stylish guys out there, the best coat can be found at Hugo Boss. Not only are all of the coats in Hugo textured as the trend applies, but men get two coats in one! A totally removable lining creates a coat for all seasons. It will be lightweight for spring and summer nights and heavy for fall and winter. It’s perfect.
