The
Museum of Latin American Art will be opening
a traveling exhibition of Latin American
Graphics: The Evolution of Identity from
the Mythical to the Personal, will represent
the work of 39 Latin-American artists in
an effort to promote modern and contemporary
Latin American art Saturday Nov. 16.
“We are very excited about this exhibition,”
Francesca Pons, associate curator said.
“This is the first travelling exhibition
that the MoLAA has organized.”
The exhibit will incorporate graphic works
using techniques such as engraving, lithography,
silkscreen and various photo-processes.
“Some of the artists represented in the
exhibit are: Rodolfo Abularach from Guatemala,
Francisco Amighetti of Costa Rica, Argentina’s
Antonio Berni, Luis Camnitzer from Uruguay
and many others,” Pons said.
Pons said the museum is promoting the exhibit
as an exploration of printmaking as a medium
conveying issues dear to Latin American
artists throughout half a century. The museum
also wants to show how new technologies
have provided Latin American artists with
exciting and innovative tools.
“We are very excited, we are still moving
a lot of the artwork around right now,”
Pons said. “The exhibit will be open to
the public Saturday and then in Feb. 16
it will be the first MoLAA organized travelling
exhibition.”
The exhibit will be on display at the MoLAA
from Nov. 16 through Feb. 16, after which
the artworks will be packed and prepared
to go on the road.
“The exhibit is going to travel all across
the United States,” Pons said.
Pons said once the exhibit has finished
its run at the MoLAA it will travel to seven
other museums across the country.
The works will travel to the Museum of Art
and History in Santa Cruz. Then out of state
to the Camden Center for the Arts in New
Jersey and the Museo de las Americas in
Denver, Colo.
The exhibit will also visit the Lowe Art
Museum at University of Miami in Florida,
Historic Arkansas Museum in Little Rock,
Ark., Smith College Museum in Massachusetts
and the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Michigan.
The museum has trusted the exhibit to be
circulated by Curatorial Assistance Traveling
Exhibitions of Pasadena.
