The
Cal State Long Beach music department will
celebrate the life and works of Michael
Carson, former head of the department’s
acclaimed opera program, in a memorial concert
at the Gerald Daniel Recital Hall Sunday
at 4 p.m.
Michael Carson, who died in 1992, was known
as one of the most versatile musicians of
his generation. Carson has received degrees
in piano from the Peabody Conservatory of
Music and the University of Texas as well
as an artist diploma in opera conducting
from the University of Southern California.
He held director and conductor positions
and served as prompter for Dame Joan Sutherland
for Opera Pacific’s production of “Norma.”
Carson came to CSULB in 1985 as the director
of opera and professor of music. He was
known as the first faculty member in the
College of the Arts to get early tenure
and promotion to full-time professor in
1989.
Proceeds from the concert, which is coordinated
by music professor Mark Uranker, will be
used to fund the CSULB piano student scholarships.
Currently, Uranker is a pianist and founding
member of Ensemble M and cabaret perpetuel.
The concert will include performances from
distinguished composers and singers such
as Ron Anderson, Chizuko Asada, Natalie
Limonick, Jonathan Mack, Thi Nyugen and
Keiko Takeshita. They will be performing
the classical musical movements of Beethoven,
Mozart, Hoiby, Brahms, Schubert and Scriabin.
Uranker will also be performing.
The recital hall is located behind the CSULB
Dance Center by the Carpenter Performing
Arts Center. Ticket prices are $7 for seniors
and CSULB students, faculty and staff and
