Halloween is time of year to get groove on

By Monica Levette Clark

For those who have gone to Knott’s Halloween Haunt, Six Flags’ Fright Fest, Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights and lastly, the Queen Mary’s Shipwreck, one too many times, then tasteful alternatives are available for you this Oct. 31.

If you are on a tighter budget than normal and you have $10 to spare, Club 49 in downtown Long Beach will hold a masquerade ball.

This macabre festival will feature live bands and disc jockeys spinning everything from electro-funk to Afro-Brazilian grooves.

The club will be decorated in Baroque décor and, to match its atmosphere, hosts of the masquerade prefer club-goers wear creative costumes and bring tickle feathers. The masquerade is an 18 years and older event and starts at 9 p.m. The event is located at 49 S. Pine Ave., and students can call (562) 495-1750 for more information.

Puresounds will present the Junior Vasquez Costume Ball, an all-night Halloween bash, dancing to the sounds of New York’s well known disc jockey, Junior Vasquez.

Vasquez is said to have produced and worked with Janet Jackson, Prince, Cher, Madonna and others.  The event will be held at the Mayan Theatre, known as one of the best venues in Los Angeles.

Laser illusions and costumed go-go dancers will be featured.

This capacity is 21 years and older and is located at 1038 S. Hill St., in downtown Los Angeles.  For more information, log on to www.puresounds.org.

For those who work more and have $35 to blow this Halloween, go to the fifth annual Monster Massive. As a precursor to all the Halloween happenings, students can attend this event on Oct. 26.

The event will feature world renown disc jockeys Felix Da Housecat, Richard Humpty Vision, Irene, Reza and more. The event will be held at the re-modeled Los Angeles Sports Arena, which will be transformed for a night of Halloween entertainment with five multimedia stages.

LA Weekly cited this event as “electronic excellence, hitting more flavors than a whole week of tricking and treating.”

The all ages event will have food and drink concession stands and multiple entrances. Monster Massive will be held from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. and is located at 3939 S. Figueroa. For more information, log onto www.monstermassive.com

Tickets for all of these events can be purchased at www.groove tickets.com.
