The
University Student Union Program Council
opened its Noon-time Concert Series Tuesday
at Cal State Long Beach’s South Plaza.
The
series’ opening act Creation played lively
and energetic reggae music that blanketed
the plaza in sound.
After
overcoming early sound and microphone problems
the five man group dropped into a fluid
set kicked off by the soulful song “Poor
Man Struggling.”
With
a wealthy infusion of guitar, keyboards,
bass, and drums the band marched through
their set with energy and enthusiasm that
was not lost upon the 100 or so students
relaxing and enjoying the scene.
Students
littered the plaza absorbing the music while
sitting on benches, at umbrella covered
tables, on the steps leading down to the
plaza area and on grassy areas shaded by
the few trees planted strategically throughout
the plaza.
Their
time coming to a close Creation launched
into a cover of the hit track “Angel” by
popular reggae artist Shaggy. Students that
managed to postpone their return to the
drudgery of classes and the all too exciting
petitioning of classes were pleasantly surprised
when “Creation” was given an additional
15 minutes.
Led
by drummer and vocalist Ja Noah and bassist/vocalist
Major Bones the band returned to their more
traditional reggae foundation. Fifteen minutes
later they ended their set and bid thanks
and farewell to the Cal State Long Beach
students and campus.
Creation
kicked off what is to be three straight
days of Noon-time Concerts. The band Breech
will play at noon today on the Southwest
Terrace and Thursday The Edmund Velasco
Quintet will be in the South Plaza.
